I have exactly the problem described in this thread

http://support.kaktusancorp.com/viewtopic.php?t=750&highlight=blank

but my host can't think of any security issues blocking it.

The page worked one day and didn't work the next. The only change to the server has been a cPanel update.

How should I troubleshoot this?

that has nothing to do with the problem...

well, there is something else misconfigured and when getting a 500 error it is server related for sure and there should be logs in apache. Not having anything in the logs about the issue mean the logs aren't configured properly, so you host support should enable logging properly and trace why executing a .php file would return a 500 error..

I have been trying to adjust the permissions and I find that using cURL I can get it to work if I have the SOHTML folder set to 755 and the template file set to 444. Does this tell you anything? I could leave it like that, the only problem is that the script resets it to 666 every edit or regeneration.

I can't get it to work the default way at all. I have allow_url_include enabled using a php.ini file in the root directory. Should I change anything else?

huh 444 persmissions, i hea for the first time such should be used... using allow_url_include won't work, you need to put and allow_url_fopen set to on to use remote includes..
