well, you can install SO in a subfolder of your site and make sites operate by SO anywhere, you don't need to touch your current site unless if you want to.
Changing current site doesn't affect ranking directly, it will affect it because all of your already crawled content will not be available anymore, so you will loose SE traffic for that. But you may grab new one with the new content you will deploy.
It is all up to you
