Hi, nice to join this forum. I am looking forward to trying out SO.
I have a problem. I did the install and all went well. The checks were passed. I executed so-install,php and it went without a hitch.
Now when I try to log in, one of the following happens:
1. Entering no password or wrong password gives an error message
2. Entering the correct password displays a blank screen.
How do I fix this?

well, can you check with your host support if your php "register_globals" option is turned on.
