I am being told that Zend Optmizer is not compatible with PHP 5.3?
Instead my host says Zend Guard is for php 5.3

Dont know if this is the problem, but when I try to execute the so-install.php fille, I get

Fatal error: Incompatible file format: The encoded file has format major ID 1, whereas the Loader expects 4 in /var/www/vhosts/mysite.com/httpdocs/tgp/so-install.php on line 0

Are there any benefits to upgrading to the version designed for PHP 5.3?
Mainly concerned about faster thumbnailling.

faster thumbnailing depends on cpu/ram, not on PHP version...
