yes akismet marks that comments as spam.
so your cronjob is doing exactly the same as that option. no need to activate it.

what i check on all my blogs is that option:
"Auto-delete spam submitted on posts more than a month old."

both ways work.
you can set a global key in the plugin file or you can set a different key for every blog in the dashboard. just let us use our own keys.
PS: i use only one key since years on hund ... |

no you dont have to put some code into the templates.
just activate the plugin and do everything from the wp-admin backend.
